Commentary

Interesting release from Tissot, combining their best selling PRX model with manga pop art. The collaboration with UFO Robot Grandizer looks like a success, judging from feedback we got on the launch day (22 August). This is not a big surprise. The popularity of both these icons speak for themselves. Although the collaboration is signed are right on the dial, it manages to remain quite discreet. The Grandizer robot bust is embossed as an outline on the dial. In good light, this outline is only barely visible. This is because it is rendered in a lighter, almost cobalt electric blue against the deeper dark blue background provided by the dial. The typical textured dial of the PRX is now gone, and in its place a smooth, flat surface with the outline is embossed.

And in the dark, the yellow SuperLumiNova on the bust outline comes to live, nicely contrasting with the blue/green lume of the hands and hour markers.

The movement remains the sturdy and time tested Powermatic 80, used in the other PRX 40 models.

And the rest of the watch remains the same as the standard PRX 40 Powermatic. Pricing wise, there is a SGD 200s premium over the PRX 40 Powermatic T137.407.11.041.00.

Release details

Tissot announces a collaboration with the manga UFO Robot Grendizer, merging two iconic characters from the 70s: the famous PRX and the super robot anime from Japan.

This association opens a new chapter in the history of Tissot, mixing Swiss craftsmanship and 70s design with manga pop culture. The launch of the new Grendizer U series, new fans are welcomed into this fantastic world, while those familiar with the manga are invited on a nostalgic but joyful journey back in time.

Inspiration from the 70s, technologies from the present

This special edition watch combines the vintage design of the PRX with the iconic elements of the popular anime series. Both were originally launched in the 1970s. The manga captured hearts across Europe from 1978, the same year as the first release of the Seastar, PRX original model. This timepiece features a 40mm 316L stainless steel case and the blue dia. This is, inspired by the blue of Grendizer itself, glows with a yellow Super-LumiNova® bust of the robot hero, complemented by a Harken-style second hand and a uniquely engraved rotor, which will for sure evoke nostalgia for any true fan. In the upper flange, there is a text in Japanese that reads “UFOロボグレンダイザー”, the original title for Grendizer. This detail underscores the authenticity of the collaboration between the Swiss brand and the Japanese manga.

Powered by the Powermatic 80 movement, the watch offers up to 80-hours of power reserve, while the Nivachron™ balance spring ensures high precision and reliability. Protected by a sapphire crystal and equipped with a mineral glass back, this special edition offers durability, while leaving an open-window on to the different nods to the series. With a water resistance of up to 10 bar (100 metres/330 feet) and an engraved crown, it guarantees dependability in any environment. The sturdy design of the iconic 70s metal bracelet has been worked to provide utmost comfort.

The watch box as well gets his own very special design, modelled after the Spazer, Grendizer’s UFO. It offers a very personal touch reminiscent of the main character’s legendary spaceship, and its box sleeve features Go-Nagai’s original drawings.
