Summary
- California has seen over 11,000 UFO sightings, with Joshua Tree NP being a hot spot for mysterious phenomena like UFOs and Yucca Man.
- Despite proximity to Marine base, visitors claim UFO sightings in Joshua Tree are not military-based, stirring the debate about their origin.
- Specific areas like Boy Scout Camp and Indian Cove Campground in Joshua Tree are known UFO hot zones, sparking theories of alien bases.
There have been more UFO sightings in California than anywhere else in the US. The Golden State has reported 11,202 UFO sightings over the years, with over 230 in 2023 alone. While these reports have come from all over California, UFOs and unexplained phenomena are rife in one surprising national park. There is no denying that strange things are seen, but the question remains whether the unexplained is other worldly or not.
Because many of the national parks in California are some of the best dark sky parks for stargazing, it would make sense for any number of them to be a hotspot for paranormal activity or where the weirdest stuff happens in the US. However, there is only one that is thought to be on the 33rd North Parallel, just as Roswell, New Mexico is: Joshua Tree National Park.
Not only have there been multiple UFO sightings at the national park, and rumors that the trails that lead to places like Skull Rock known to have faces have been placed by aliens, but there are reports of a Yucca Man traipsing around the park. Throw in a secret alien base hidden within Joshua Tree and the amount that cannot be explained is perplexing.

Joshua Tree National Park’s Proximity To A Marine Base Might Explain The UFOs
Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center does fly military aircraft in the skies over Joshua Tree National Park
There is no denying that there are UFOs that fly over Joshua Tree National Park at night. However, many believe that the source of them is easily explained. This is because Joshua Tree is approximately 40 miles away from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.
It would not be unheard of for the Marines to be doing training at night when they are not a public spectacle or are doing exercises that need to be done under the cover of night, specifically.
While the Marines have not admitted or denied that they train in and around Joshua Tree, they do perform aviation activities throughout the year. This means it is not unheard of to see a military plane in the sky while hiking during the day. There is no reason one or more would not fly through the night sky.
Despite this, many who have seen UFOs in Joshua Tree National Park are not convinced that they are military-based. Instead, there is a strong belief that what is flying in the air is from another planet other than Earth and that there are even specific locations in the park where UFOs are most commonly seen.

Joshua Tree National Park Has Several Areas That Are Hot Zones For UFOs
Boy Scout Camp and Indian Cove Campground are just a half a mile apart and have multiple witness accounts of UFOs
While UFOs have been spotted throughout the national park, there are a few areas that repeatedly come up as the location where those who have witnessed UFOs at Joshua Tree claim to see them. These locations all have witnesses who viewed the UFOs at night and because of this, there was no reasonable way to truly see what it was they were observing, only able to see the lights in the darkness.
The locations where UFOs are often in Joshua Tree National Park include:
These two locations are approximately half a mile from one another. As such, it makes sense that both locations would see essentially the same thing, which is multi-color UFOs in the Joshua Tree National Park dark skies.
Additionally, there is rumored to be an alien base, perhaps akin to the landing pad in Canada, located within the 795,000 acres that make up the national park. To date, no one has ever located it or even knows where to begin looking. But, if this base does exist, it would make sense that there is so much UFO activity that occurs in the skies over Joshua Tree.

The Yucca Man May Call Joshua Tree National Park Home
The Yucca Man was first seen in Joshua Tree National Park in 1971
While not alien or UFO related, there are tales of the Yucca Man who has been seen wandering through Joshua Tree National Park.
The Yucca Man, who was first seen in 1971 by park employees, is rumored to be a creature akin to Bigfoot. The same figure was reportedly seen at Twentynine Palms Marine Base after a Marine was found unconscious with his rifle bent. He reported that a huge creature, approximately 12 feet tall and very hairy approached him, grabbed his rifle, bent it in half, and knocked him to the ground.
However, the legend of the Yucca Man goes back much further than that. This is because the Tongva People, who lived in the region, called those who looked like the Yucca Man, Takwies. These creatures were believed to be supernatural, and their name is roughly translated into “hairy devils.”
What is interesting, is that, according to the Tongva, the Takwies could transform themselves into “a large green fireball moving through the night sky.” It could be that the UFOs that visitors to Joshua Tree National Park are really the Takwies or Yucca Man manifesting themselves into something different.
Whether alien, something from ancient times, supernatural, or military related, there are clearly some strange phenomena that have been reported from Joshua Tree over the years. Just what it all is, however, remains a mystery.
