A new Discovery Channel show that was filmed in Roswell earlier this year is set to participate in this year’s Roswell Daily Record Film Festival, which is part of the UFO Festival. “Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction” features hosts Chrissy Newton and Mitch Horowitz speaking with experiencers of the UFO phenomenon at the Variety Bar. The pair examined photographic and physical evidence presented to them by those appearing on the show.
Newton and Horowitz discussed the show and their experience in the city of Roswell in a video interview with the Daily Record on Wednesday. “We have multiple people that come to Roswell, to the Variety, which, you know, is the local watering hole,” Newton said. “There are people that have encounters from the first to the fourth kind, and also, if you want to include the fifth kind. They’ve had multiple different experiences, and Mitch and I take data, and we look at it from all different perspectives from testimony data, and try to come to our best opinion, I would say if it is a UAP (unidentified aerial phenomena) or not.”
Horowitz commented on the range of people having these experiences, stating, “They’re from all over North America, including Latin America, all areas of the U.S. and Canada, from probably Ontario through the Pacific Coast. I think what is seen in the spotlight that’s placed on the experiencers is how canny and capable so many of these people are. Many of them have technical backgrounds themselves. They might be veterans, engineers, people in digital tech — and not infrequently, they came to the table having done some of their own research prior to sharing their story.” Horowitz said in these cases, the public has the chance to appreciate the maturity and the presence of mind that many experience during these events.
When it comes to filming a show about the UFO phenomenon, Roswell seemed like a natural choice due to its place in history and pop culture in connection with the 1947 Roswell Incident, where an alleged flying saucer crashed north of town. “Roswell is synonymous with UFOs. … I don’t know of another town that has such a close association. It was natural,” Horowitz said.
Newton added that she agrees with Horowitz and pointed out that Roswell is firmly established in pop culture, which includes several TV shows.
Newton and Horowitz will be at the Roswell Daily Record Film Festival on Saturday at 5 p.m. to screen episode 3 of the show, along with a special preview of episode 4. Following the screening, there will be a question-and-answer session and time for a meet-and-greet with attendees. There is a possibility that some familiar faces will be in the audience. Horowitz said, “I think we’re going to have a good time. … I think it’s going to be a bit of a reunion for the show as well.”
The event is free to the public.
