Last month, Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS) and the National UFO Historical Records Center (NUFOHRC) announced a partnership to preserve historical resources and help create educational opportunities in Sandoval County.
NUFORHC is a non-profit organization focused on collecting and archiving historical and military records of UFO sightings from all over the world. In the new partnership, the two groups will combine resources to ensure the preservation of these documents and use them to teach students about subjects including historical research and science.
David Marler, executive director of NUFORHC, told the Daily Record an email that “this partnership between the National UFO Historical Records Center and the Rio Rancho Public School system is a first in the history of the UFO subject. With a shared desire to preserve this element of history and educate the public, we hope this will serve to inspire students to have a sense of wonder tempered with healthy skepticism.
“Using the subject of UFOs as a springboard, we look to educate students not only on the legitimate history of UFOs but also weave in elements such as physics, astronomy, military history, and critical thinking skills,” Marler stated.
In a press release announcing the partnership, RRPS Chief Operations Officer Michael Baker said, “We are excited to embark on this unique partnership with the National UFO Historical Records Center. This collaboration will not only preserve important historical documents, but also provide our students with exceptional educational experiences.”
With the agreement, the two groups will work to use existing school facilities to house the extensive collection.
New Mexico has long been home to famous cases of UFO sightings. The news of an alleged crash of a UFO north of Roswell in July of 1947 made headlines worldwide. On April 24, 1964, Socorro Police Sergeant Lonnie Zamora reported witnessing a shiny, metallic egg-shaped object that appeared to have landing gear and a red insignia, sitting on the ground before taking off into the sky.
When asked about the historical significance of New Mexico and its history of UFO cases, Marler said, “Acknowledging that the subject of UFOs is so deeply rooted in the history of New Mexico, it seems only logical to have the largest UFO historical archive ever assembled in North America right here in the heart of our state.”
