BOWMAN, S.C. — The UFO Welcome Center burned to the ground Thursday morning.
Firefighters from several fire departments were on the scene putting out hot spots around 9 a.m.
The UFO Welcome Center in Bowman, S.C., caught fire on Thursday morning.
The two-story UFO Welcome Center was a silver-painted design based on the “flying saucers” of the 1950s.
The structure, about 16 feet tall and 39 feet in diameter, was built of lumber held together with wood screws and bolts.
Bowman resident Jody Pendarvis decided to build the UFO center in 1995 after coming across lumber that was left over after his grandmother’s store was torn down to make room for a BP gas station.
About eight tons of plywood and boards went into the project.

At first, it was going to be Jody’s UFO #1, but the postmaster suggested Pendarvis name it the UFO Welcome Center.
